Running - Day 1

I was running every day last semester but then slacked when my life became chaotic...

So today, I started again... Ran 3.0 miles... I really do like to run.

A Quote...

We're all so connected. I desparately wish we knew it.

This hit me hard. We are connected in so many ways, and we often neglect this in light of our own interests.

Keeping It All Together While Watching It All Fall Apart

Why is it that we feel the need to have the outward manifestation of our life be perfect when everything is falling apart on the inside?

Here are my guesses:

1. We are afraid to admit we need help and are dependent on others.
2. The belief that failure indicates weakness.
3. The idea of keeping up with the Jones comes to play in that we have to be happy in order to do that.

What should happen:

1. Allow others to support us in our struggles.
2. Seek out community that is safe and non-judgmental.
3. In doing the above, we gain strength.
4. We have to realize that the Jones don't exist...and if they do, they've got their own set of unique issues that they are dealing with.

Well, How's That Working for Ya?

The quest for giving up Dr. Pepper has failed today...although I only had 1. Better than normal.

2008 Year in Review...

Things That Got Done in 2008...

Felt Challenged

I have some really awesome friends who challenge me to become a holistically better person. Kelley (the co-author/major slacker of the blog) is certainly one of these people (although she is unlikely to get this compliment b/c she never reads this :) ). The girls from camp (the truckies) challenged me in so many ways (i.e. waterskiing and thought-provoking early morning discussions). Certainly I am grateful for my Psych professors who challenge me every day in their classes and who work tirelessly to help me learn and fulfill my dreams. They have been one of the greatest influences on my life.

Felt Passionate About Something

Wow...this is definitely true of this year. I was able to get a grant to do adventure education, which is something that I LOVE to do. I got to work with at-risk middle school girls and it was an amazing experience.

RESEARCH...I am definitely passionate about research --- 3 projects in one year... I love it. Again, my Psych professors, especially Dr. Swindell, have been tremendous in helping me discover this passion.

Followed My Heart

I switched my major from English Ed to Psych. What a hard choice it was, but I have not ever been so excited about where my life is going in terms of my career. And, now I am applying to grad school...fun times.

There were many other things, but these were the immediate stand-outs.

Back at it.

I am back at AU and therefore, back to blogging. I am SO glad to be back. That could quite possibly be the understatement of the year!

Anyway, I have been thinking a lot about a verse in Phillipians 3 that says that we are supposed to forget the past and look forward to the future. This is such a huge (really beyond huge passage for me). With this "forgetting" comes a degree of forgiveness that allows us to move beyond the past and remain in the present and look toward the future.

So, I am applying this to my life in some very real, powerful, and tangible ways. It's difficult, but good. I am more confident where I am standing right now in my relationship with God than I have been ever.
